We List License Free Software
Freeware & software gems. The perfect tools for the job.

This website lists the best license free alternatives to commercial software. There's no good reason to be paying for the often bloated software suites available through your local software peddler. There's a wealth of excellent free software to be found - if you know where to look. That's where we come in! All license free software has been carefully selected and re-evaluated throughout the years, based on our experience and opinion.

People tend to have a healthy scepticism towards all things free. «There's no such thing as a free lunch» is a quote you hear all the time. While that's a great rule of thumb in the real world, it holds no water on the net. People and organizations need to stand out among millions. They want to get noticed and generate interest. Writing great software and offering it for free is a way to do just that. Some might even enjoy writing perfect code and want their "art" to have merit. Others are simply trying to impress potential employers. Whatever their motivation, a lot of these freeware tools provide more and better functionality than their commercial counterparts while actually being easier on system resources. We'll be sure to mention any paid-for software when it's clearly superior to any of the freebies out there, though.

As a side note, incorporating different functionalities in a "software suite" is only a good thing when they're compatible. A backup tool shouldn't try to be a DVD burner, for instance. Or as they say in the Unix world: Do one thing - and do it well.

This one's been around for a long time, but has been kept perfectly up to date and is one of the most comprehensive resources out there.

Pricelessware
The communities from the alt.comp.freeware newsgroups compile a new list of "the best of the best" every year. Started in 2000, I've been following it ever since and it became one of my all-time favorite resources.

No Nags
The folks at Nonags put together a large collection of 32-bit Windows software that has no disabled features, nags, time limits, or any other tricks. I usually check this one if the others come up empty.
